Well I've done another update on the rules site. Some great rules submitted again. Lots I want to incorporate myself. I have received a few rules that score points for bounced emails. What is everyone's take on this?
Yes bounces can be generated by spam, but for the most part I believe them to be legit. I think it may be dangerous to start scoring bounces. IMHO.
I'm guessing my QMAIL_DBL_BOUNCE rule may be (at least part of) the reason you're bringing this up. Personally, I have *almost never* seen a double-bounce message that wasn't spam-generated. ("Almost never" means, "in six years of postmaster duties, I may have seen one or two that were legit... but I can't recall them at the moment.")
For me, a double-bounce message is nearly certain to be spam. Which is why I wrote up that rule.
I agree with your note that you're "Not sure it will be for everyone"; it's mostly of use to mail admins running Qmail. (Honestly, nobody else should ever see any Qmail double-bounces...)
Of course, nobody is ever obliged to use *any* of these rules. Even if I weren't the submitter for this particular rule, I think I'd be against a policy of "let's not have any rules of type X". I'd rather that they all be submitted and discussed -- perhaps even have warnings on some of them, like "Beware: this rule might result in [insert nasty side-effects here]! Use at your own risk!" But I think it's better to put them forward as possibilities, and let people decide what will help them in their own particular situation. That's part of what rule customization is all about.
