<climbing up up on soapbox> It looks like this thread is dying off but I've just gotten through reviewing two days' worth of messages. I have to admit that I agree with Abigail on the premise of the thread. If I can run clam-antivirus and mime-defang on my mail servers (including one on which I run two mailing lists with Mailman 2.0.13) I don't see why the SF people can't do the same thing - as well as considering making the list subscription-only but the archives world-viewable). It is, after all, a responsible thing to do, and the software is free and works quite well.
