Hi,

I have a question regarding the parameters to spamd/spamc.
What I'm hoping to achieve is a setup where user_prefs are read from SQL but also have per-user bayes filtering and possibly per-user auto-whitelisting.
To make things more fun the server doesn't have any users physically installed on the machine, so no entries in /etc/passwd. Instead I'm using just something
I whipped up to scan mail based on some sql queries. I noticed I can't use the virtual-config-dir setting with the SQL setting so my optimal solution is out (unless someone says that's not necessarily true, which would be nice). So that leaves me with one final thought, if I were to setup a vpopmail domain with placeholder users for each one (ex: actual email is [EMAIL PROTECTED] placholder on this server is [EMAIL PROTECTED]) and then give spamd the option -v -u vpopmail. Would that cause it to use the vpopmail home directory for bayes/AWL and still use the SQL user_prefs if I give spamc the placholder user with -u? That brings up another question I had. The manual page for spamd says this for the -v option:

----------------------------------------
Enable vpopmail config. If specified with with -u set to the vpopmail user, this allows spamd to lookup/create user_prefs in the vpopmail user's own maildir. This option is useful for vpopmail virtual users who do not have an entry in the system /etc/passwd file.

If specified without -u , then it allows every mail account on a vpopmail virtual domain setup to have their own user-customizable spamassassin preferences, assuming they have their own home directory set.
------------------------------------------

I'm not clear from that what the difference is between using the -u and not using the -u could someone clarify for me?

Thanks for any assistance. I could probably figure this stuff out by trying dozens of parameter combos but I'm hoping someone could save me the painful hours.
