I am upgrading a Red Hat 7.3 mail server to Red Hat 9 and am exploring SPAM-filtering software for it. A Spamassassin RPM comes with the Red Hat release and I am looking for an easy Howto to set it up. All the documentation that I have seen so far require you to play with mail transport modules and edit mysterious esoteric configuration files.
SA configured for Unix/Linux mailservers demands basic mailadmin skills, including detailed configuration of the mailserver(s) (MTA and MDA.) Since modern mailservers can be configured in an almost infinite number of ways to suit site needs and preferences, you won't simply have to play with mail transport modules as you put it, but very many other things as well. Depending on your choice of MTA / MDA, there are mailing lists to help with this. All of them demand dedication from you.
There is no simple HOWTO as far as SA goes, but 3 or 4 detailed man pages - and this list :-) Alternatively, you may purchase a commercial Linux version, such as Guardian Digital's EnGuarde and configure the whole server using a web-based configuration tool. You'd better know what you're doing, though.
Avoid the SpamAssassin rpm that came with your Red Hat 7.3 distro. It's out of date. Find and install the latest - presently 2.55 and soon to be 2.60.
A quick search on Google found that there are several GUI front-ends and wizards for the Windows version of Spamassassin, which would streamline the installation considerably. Are there any such GUI environments for Linux? Or are we still confined to arcane editing of configuration files?
There is no GUI frontend for simplifying the Unix / Linux SA configuration. The Windows version of SA presupposes a Windows admin skills-level and mentality - I say no more. There is a web-based configuration utility for the easiest of user choices, but it presupposes that the site admin has already configured SA for his site.
Try, at least, to configure your chosen MTA / MDA using Unix / Linux skills and come back when you can't make SA work. There are enough people here willing to help.
Best,
Tony
