I checked sarc.com but nothing on it. I heard this on a car board I am on. Any truth? "Just a note of warning...

For the last couple of weeks, I have been getting "connection refused"
errors on my Win XP computer at home any time I tried to access web
pages. I got the message on 3Si, SBN, CNN, Ureach.com and even when
trying to access my own router. I could reboot, it would work fine for 20
minutes or so and then start refusing connections again.

I finally got frustrated and installed Norton last night. It seems that a
program called WebMail_Checkit!.exe would sieze my network connection and
use my computer to send SPAM all over the internet. It was sending at the
rate of one message about every twenty seconds and was advertising penis
elargement pills. What's worse is that it was using my own email address
as the "reply-to".

Just a warning... if you're having *ANY* network problems at all, check
for the SPAM virus. Damn SPAMmers... they'll literally do anything to try
to make a quick buck. "

Damn spammers? How 'bout the idiot that installed the software that allows access to his computer? WebMail Checkit or programs like it can be "bundled" or rewritten for remote access or relaying. It's an installer that installs who-know-what on your computer.

Why is this the fault of a spammer? If you want to install "free" software, then caveat emptor. Tell him to ask for a refund. :)

I listened to someone complain that she was shopping for a Volvo, and her web browser kept popping up ads for Lexus. She blamed Lexus for being evil and trying to get her away from the Volvo page. Didn't even dawn on her that she's probably running adware/spyware.

Root of the problem: these types of users see computers as entertainment vehicles. They install anything and everything. As long as it's free or pirated. They get what's coming to them. I'm just upset that I can't boot them off the network when they do the same stupid stuff at work.

Oh well. This is going way OT. It's not a spam problem. It's an operator malfunction.
