At the bottom of the page in the above link is the line:

Note: SpamAssassin is a trademark of Deersoft, Inc

Putting www.deersoft.com into a browser takes you to the McAfee site,
where a search for SpamAssassin leads to this page...

http://www.mcafeeb2b.com/other/jump/deersoft-support-enterprise.asp

so it looks like either this is a different SpamAssassin, or they're
making a lot of money reselling this one.

No, it's the same SA, sort of, and it's the way it always has been, you've just never been aware of it..

It's a similar relationship that Razor has to Cloudmark Spamnet. The same company writes an open-source perl product, and a for-sale windows product with separate code bases (the windows ones are written in C/C++ not perl AFAIK) but the same design concepts.

Many of the Core SA-devels are/were Deersoft employees and Deersoft was founded by Craig Hughes and a few others.

Of course, Deersoft, the original maker of SpamAssassin (open source) and SpamAssassin pro (Outlook express) has since been bought out by McAfee, but the relationship is the same still.
