I *just* installed amavis-milter on my sendmail box for the same reason.  I
didn't want to lose procmail.  It *is* slow, but I have a reasonably low-volume
mail server, so it's not a huge issue for me.  Anything more than a few hundred
messages per hour will probably choke it.  Right now, I can process each message
in about 15-30 seconds.
