I can't speak for Sendmail, as I'm using Postfix, but I believe amavis
works with sendmail in the same manner as postfix.

The general setup for amavis and your MTA is to set up a content
filter...your MTA passes the message through to Amavais via smtp, and
amavis sends it back to your MTA, again via smtp.

Amavis (the newer versions) can be configured to make use of spamassassin,
directly (although, if you configure it to do so, it also looks for
razor...and I'm still trying to find the right combination of things to
comment out to disable the razor checks).

Otherwise, you can still use spamassassin via procmail, and amavis via the
content filter method. The installation procedure for Amavis comes with
the software.
