As TheStreet.com put it, "It says something about the state of things that today seemed like just another day at the office on Wall Street." Not that anyone's content. It's just that investors, like the staff of a high school literary magazine, have gotten used to a certain level of angst and dread. </P><P> "The two-year-old refrain 'It can't get any worse' went mute" on Monday, said SmartMoney.com. It doesn't help that the media, whose job it is to report how bad things are, also sometimes speculate on how lousy things could get later. Behold all the recent stories on the wonders of bonds, not to mention this week's Time cover, "Will We Ever Be Able to Retire?" Some analysts "perversely" want the market to crash now and get it over with, said the Wall Street Journal, because it would "wash out the selling" that's been slowly torturing the market all summer. In other words, they want you to panic. Nice.</P><P> We don't know if journos expect Bush to wave a magic stock-fixing wand, or if they're frustrated from repressing all presidential criticism since Sept. 11, but they're having a field day tying Dubya to the bear market. TV news channels have been running Bush's rah-rah economic speeches alongside outsized stock tickers (ticking downward, of course). The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Tuesday headline "Dow dives again despite Bush's optimism" and the New York Daily News' "Bush up, but stox down," were typical. As the Washington Post's Howard Kurtz observed, "The media love to simplify events, and the idea that a president must rescue the stock market -- which is based on millions of daily investment decisions and economic factors -- is apparently hard to resist."</P><P> To some extent, Bush asked for trouble by glibly issuing vague but predictive statements like "I believe people are going to come back into the market." The New York Times wrote, "Traditionally presidents stick to talking about the fundamentals of the economy ... while steering clear of any suggestions about how markets will act." Leave the stock PR to the analysts, George. </P><P> The AP seemed to imply that Bush should do less cheerleading and more sacking. During a contrived AP question-and-answer piece ("Is there anything left for the government to try?"), writer Martin Crutsinger said "some on Wall Street" want Bush to boot Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and SEC chair Harvey Pitt, "but Bush is so far backing both men." The press this morning was full of the story of RealNetworks's attempt to swipe food out of the mouth of Microsoft. Real is doing this in two ways. First, it is introducing server software, dubbed Helix, that can produce streaming media in a number of formats, including Apple's and Microsoft's, and it runs on platforms other than Windows. Second, Real has laid out a timetable for making some of Helix's source code available for free to developers in the open-source community.</P><P> ComputerWire (in a story carried in the Register) called Real's open-source initiative the company's "boldest and riskiest move to date." CNET's News.com characterized it as "the latest in a series of strategic twists and turns that has made RealNetworks one of the only companies to survive direct Microsoft competition for years." InternetNews said Real had "(thrown) down a digital media gauntlet," and the Boston Globe called Helix a "head-on challenge to Microsoft Corp." Can't you just smell the glee?</P><P> The New York Times's John Markoff broke the story of Real's plans for Helix on Sunday (as credited by CNET). Having scooped it, the Times covered the actual announcement with perfunctory Reuters copy. The Wall Street Journal gave the story short shrift, assigning it to an unnamed staff reporter who manifestly doesn't get the concept of open-source software. (Here's a clue: Microsoft's decision to give away the Windows Media Player client has nothing whatsoever to do with open source.) The Globe evidenced a larger clue quotient on the disruptive power of the open source meme. Reporter Hiawatha Bray quoted a Forrester analyst thus: "Once you put your media into the open-source community, any feature that you need can be built. It's very difficult to compete with that."</P><P> Slashdot carried the definitive statement of what Real's moves actually mean to the open-source community. Bruce Perens, one of the gods of that movement, attended the Real press conference, reported from there live via wireless laptop, and sent an analysis to Slashdot.
