I've long been of the philosophy that spamassassin should focus on exactly one thing: identification and tagging of spam. Leave the delivery to something which does delivery well. Leave the SMTP to something which does SMTP well. etc, etc, etc. I haven't chopped out the delivery stuff altogether, but have been sorely tempted to.
