Hi Rob, Brant, I remember reading a while back that a potential source of slowness was how you have your DNS set up to resolve names. The symptom was that external references were quick to resolve while local references were very slow.
I'm sorry that I can't remember what the exact problem and solution were but this may be something to look into.
