By the way, for assistance in decoding what attribute 234 might be, I was
advised to give the output of "smartctl -H -r ataioctl,2 /dev/sda".  It is
attached.

Wikipedia indicates:

"234 0xEA Average erase count AND Maximum Erase Count
Decoded as: byte 0-1-2 = average erase count (big endian) and byte 3-4-5 =
max erase count (big endian)"
Not sure whether this is the case here or not, but it's plausible.  The
decimal value is up to 1180 right now.
