Hi John, No purpose -- just laziness. :) I have to open only one bottle. I've noticed a slight darkening of the bottom section, but it hasn't seemed to affect operation (remember that the same ultrasonic transducers are used in ultrasonic jewelry cleaners).
The liquid in the lower cavity conducts the sound waves to the plastic cone (cup), and the shape of the cone focusses the sound waves into the liquid in the cone. The sound waves literally shake the liquid in the cone into a vapor, which bubbles up to produce the mist that's inhaled. (The larger ultrasonic humidifiers have a much higher power ultrasonic transducer that doesn't need a blower to push the mist out.)
