I'm using epub format fwiw. It's free and open and there are
converters from all the other formats in which I regularly get books.
(and there are readily available tools for removing DRM from books
you've already purchased. Including, yes, kindle format.)

PS the epub format reader I use on the Android is "FBReaderJ" a  java
port of "FBReader" specifically for the Android.
