Hindutva tries to push Vedic Hinduism as the core of "Hinduism"

Hinduism, (if you accept the word) is a collection of assorted tribes, pagans
and animists living in the Indian subcontinent who generally share a tendency
to worship nature and lack an ideology that seeks to unite in the name of
religion. Vedic Hinduism is a prominent intellectual progeny of this motley
group.

Pre islamic and pre-Christian tribes all over the world seemed to have similar
characteristsics but most of them have been wiped out.
