The d60 / d40 actually have *better* lens compatibility than the d80 ...

i have a bunch of old pre-AI mount nikon lenses from the early 1960s..
and a few AI lenses from the 80s... All of these mount perfectly on
the d40 (but dont meter... but with a bit of practice you can learn to
guess the metering by taking a picture and checking the output on the
lcd - and adjust the aperture / shutter speed) ... These older solid
metal lenses do not mount on the d80.

All of the Nikon AF lenses mount, meter and expose perfectly on the
d40 / d60 ... the only thing you lose is auto-focus ...which you
probably don't need anyway if you are shooting landscapes, as you can
either manual-focus or scale-focus.

The nice thing is you can buy a lot of older AI / pre-AI and AF / AF-G
lenses for very little money...since many sellers associate these with
film cameras.
