If you intend to take your time learning I would also recommend
something like the Canon SX10 IS or Nikon's Coolpix P80. I think most
manufacturers have cameras in that same range. They can be used as
good point-and-shoots and when needed they do give quite a bit of
manual control. They also have super-zoom capabilities if you are so
inclined. The only pain is that the manual focus is also motor driven.
