Not sure if it's really our responsibility to push for social change in India. Outcomes for Foreigners who meddle in culture there or tell people how to live don't always end well. As I'm sure you'd know. I wouldn't be so quick to blame alcohol for problems. If there are already problems, all alcohol does is just bring them to the surface. I have friends in Germany who drink a lot of schnapps, ride their motorbikes around and still get IT/Computer work done at a remarkable level of precision. The other interesting point you mention is simply the massive amounts of cash that exist in Mumbai and other places that perhaps come from what you regard as dubious business sources. That ends up as reinvestment in IT businesses. Similar to the film industry there.
