Hello,
Just to signal there are several mistakes with the recipe "perf.bb" from poky

My kernel module recipes built seems OK, but I have a problem when doing

Jesus Christ's, Greg?!
This is what you should look for (exact string):

A two-letter answer is too cryptic. He's not just asking what the variable
name is, he's asking where the file is that contains the variable.

@Off Topic, regarding managing U-Boot out of YOCTO tree
Just to clear some things here... At least from my side.
Anyway, whatever you, guys, do with YOCTO (and YOCTO indeed gives and
delivers the complete BSP + rootfs), I usually use ONLY one YOCTO
component: rootfs. All other components I manage
Hello Simon,
I'll try to help you today. I am more (99%) BSP guy. There are much
more versatile people for rootfs DEPENDS and RDEPENDS.
Good practice is to post first to the list, then, after all, ask for
private help.
Best Regards,
Zoran

Hello Simon,
As I am in EU time zone, and vast majority of YOCTO maintainers are in
USA time zone, here is my naive try to help you with this application
problem.
As I googled the problem, and sorted out the thoughts, you are missing
one important package (which is not added in your build).
