Now I seem to have stumbled upon a minor bug: protrusion doesn't work
for glyphs inserted with \XeTeXglyph:
\font\x ="Charis SIL" \x
\parindent0pt
\parfillskip0pt
\XeTeXprotrudechars2
\lpcode\x /w = 500 % = slot 90
abc\par
wbc\par
\char`wbc\par
\XeTeXglyph90 bc\p
the glyphs: as Unicode
chars, as a LaTeX text command (eg., \textendash) or as glyph names.
Opinions on this and everything else are welcome!
Happy testing!

This is the same kind of issue as one of the earlier ones: the whole
point of XeTeX is that one simply types what one wants into a Unicode
editor (i.e., if you want an em-dash, you simply type an em-dash, and
there is no need any more for TeX conventions like ---, \"a, etc. etc.).
Even if ther
es anyone have an idea about this problem? Am I missing something?
Many thanks in anticipation!

I attach a simple tex file and the pdf it produces to illustrate the problem.
We set the ~ character to catcode 12 so that it can function normally in
devanagari text (typed in the tex file in roman). When j and ~n come together
in a word, then they produce the conjunct consonant as seen in the
utomatically switch fonts based on unicode

With a publisher's permission I used xelatex to provide them copy, not
camera-ready copy, for a long book that has Sanskrit in Devanagari and an
English translation. Of course, the files I provided the publisher are pdfs.
Now, the publisher wants them in doc. When they try to cut and paste from
nown name Siddhartha where dependent vowel (matra) I is
visually at the very beginning and R is visually at the very end.
