Hi
I am trying to use RealVNC Viewer on my machine but for some weird unknown
reason whenever I open the app it closes a few seconds afterwards.
It does this silently with nothing written to event logs on the system.
Anybody experienced this before?
Cheers
Sean

VNC 4.x builds cleanly on RHL 7.3, so if ASL 1.0 is equivalent, you
shouldn't have problems building it.

I tried building from a vnc-4.1.2-5.fc6.src.rpm that I found on
rpmfind.net, but there were too many dependencies. I was afraid that I
wouldn't be able to get them all. I then tried an earlier 4.x
"vnc-4.0-5.src.rpm". All went well until nearing the end of rpmbuild
when an unspecified dependency gl

Hi Calvin,
You can download the standard source-code for VNC Free Edition 4.1.2 from
http://www.realvnc.com/download.html The standard source code is a tarball,
not a source RPM, though.

Could also check the %windir%\system32\DRIVERS\ETC\SERVICES file..

Hi Douglas,
Why? How would that help?

I was wondering that myself.
Update.. I could not get vnc to work on 5900... Somehting taking the port.
So I moved it to 5901 and configured the router to forward public ports 5901
to internal 5900.
That's the best I can do. Seems I have another computer at another location
misbehaving... Will work
Craig,
I would *strongly* advise you to find out what's currently using port 5900
on that server, using the netstat -ab command as I previously suggested, to
make sure it's not something malicious.
What does VNC Viewer report if you actually try connecting to port 5900?

Craig,
The fact that attempting to connect gives the message "not an RFB server" in
spite of there being nothing using port 5900 according to netstat strongly
suggests that the system has been compromised. Your best bet is to take the
system off the network & to run a full virus/malware scan on i

ask for my viewer password and I would be golden.
It stopped working and when I start the viewer, It never asks for my

Running netstat -ab does not yield the answers we want.. This is a windows
2000 pro system and the netstat options are different than on a windows xp
box.
However, netstat does not show 5900 in use at all.
I have closed the 5900 port on the router and opened 5901.

Hello Wez,
Thanks. The source seemed to build okay (without errors) but it didn't
produce an Xvnc executable.
When I run vncinstall I get:
"Couldn't find xc/programs/Xserver/Xvnc"
Neither did it build or install the vnc module for
/usr/X11/lib/modules/extensions
I saved all the messages from t
Hi Stephen,
Are you sure that you're connecting to the RFB port for your VNC server, and
not to the HTTP port? What are you entering into the Server box in the
Connection Details dialog?

Hi Calvin,
Did you follow the build instruction exactly, including the patch command
for the xc tree?

Hi Stephen,
The Connection Details dialog is the dialog that pops up when you run VNC
Viewer, into which you enter the server to which you wish to connect. What
are you entering into that?

Didn't see any build instructions when I looked in the top-level
directories so I just did the usual ./configure ; make. Just now I
looked at the deeper README in the "unix" subdir.
Trying to find a source tar-ball to download on xfree86.org is not easy.
Instead I'm downloading XFree86-4.2.1-13.73
Hi Calvin,
No, I'm afraid it sounds like you're not. :(
Since you're building for something on a par with RedHat 7.3, I'd recommend
building against XFree86 4.2.1, in which case you just need to download
X420-src-1.tgz and the 4.2.0 to 4.2.1 patch file from
http://www.xfree86.org/downloads.html

You need to set up "port forwarding" just as the FAQ on the website suggests
