I use VNC over Hamachi (http://www.hamachi.cc) for friends at different colleges; works a charm, except that they have to add me as a client, rather than me connecting of my own accord -- oh well, more security for them. In terms of setting up H, it's about as painless as you can get. Oh, and it's free. :]
