This is because F17 has reached its EOL. Typically, FX's reach their
EOL one month after the release of F(X+2).
So, suggestion to you would be to upgrade.

Fedora 17+ supports a separate /usr just fine. It's the separate
/usr/lib that's screwing it

nouveau driver was active, and I found that the method documented on the
net of rebuilding the initrd with the nvi

But one partition is giving problem
repositories, but does remove it from the initrd of
the kernel installed from the dvd. I have uninstall the repository
kernels and then reinstall them so that I can get to the point of
starting xorg. The nvidia and nouveau drivers cannot coexist, I had the
same problem in fedora 17 as well, but
