In the past (f14,f16) I have muddled through these
somehow, but always felt I wasn't doing it quite correctly.
I recall some advice e.g., just create the dir, /dev, but not its
contents.?

I doubt I still have both before and after grub.cfg
I have no proof at all that grub2-mkconfig after each kernel update is
needed.

today we switched our tv,internet,phone to att-uverse.
Installation seemed to go smoothly.
Initial cks of internet access worked,
on both my f16 box and my wife's imac.
But that was with browsers already up from previous to changeover.
Now f16 has no internet.

via preupdate from f14.
It came up in gnome i think but it wasn't too good,
even some warnings that I didnt capture.
Couldn't find logout panel for a long time,
seemed to be accessed on top row, on far right off screen.

This copy of f14 boots, boot messages all OK.

I made a backup copy onto my 2nd scsi disk, seen as sdc7 [call it F14sdc7]
This was preparation for using it for preupgrade to F16.

Still was unable to make id:3:initdefault: take effect.

Working from my mainf14,
I changed the /etc/inittab in the f14backup,
[root@f14
My backup copy of F14 boots, all looks normal,
boot messages all "OK"
but then I can't login: after entering my password
the screen recycles to the login screen,
and continues to do this if I keep trying.

what do you mean? F13 should boot automatically if it is the default.
Did you choose the F14 stanza?
Did it then fail? what error?

I seem to recall (many years ago)
having to access my linksys router
using a web browser , to 192.168.2.1 in my case,
and using Setup command.
username,password admin, admin.
maybe you have already done this?

My first ever attempt preupgrade; F12 to F14
I muddled through it and eventually able to boot F14:
$ uname -r
2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686.PAE
In general looks ok;
I had to change hostname manually after booting F14.
But, now, occasionally when starting emacs as root
getting error:[root@f12 grub]# em
this suggestion is long shot.
Back when I was an install newbie, on f10
the install would always fail upon trying to bring up X.
None of the usual kernel things like vesa= worked.
No further ideas from this list ( this list was critical to me getting this
far).
Finally I found via googling
$ mplayer -playlist http://www.radiotunisienne.tn/popup/rtci.asx
works for me, playing right now

a calendar popped up on all of my 6 workspaces in top right corner.
I cant move it or get rid of it.
This happened as I was groping around with the mouse
trying to find the pointer.
exactly how can I get rid of it?
