I reinstalled xscreensaver-gl, version 5.14-1ubuntu1, carefully set the delay for the screensaver to 10 minutes, and selected AntSpotlite. Within a few minutes the system completely locked up. Actually, I was able to insert the xorg.conf file while running from the CD. I mounted the disk partition with /etc/X11 on it, and copied xorg.conf into the live CD's /etc/X11, switched to a text console, and restarted X with 'service gdm restart'.
