I booted the Karmic alpha 4 CD in safe mode, and X came up eventually in 800x600 resolution, apparently using the savage driver, after trying vesa first. The log is interesting ... a lot of tests resulted in a useable mode selection.
I would certainly appreciate the revival of the old boot-time screen mode selection from 6.06 and 7.xx versions, in this case!
