At first, I thought the only recourse was to power off the machine and
restart. However, further testing has proven I am able to use CTL-ALT-
DEL to initiate logoff, then the mouse works fine when I log back in.

Same problem here. HP CQ50-215NR laptop w/nvidia graphics. Works fine
until I install the nvidia driver, then no display. Only recourse I
know is to completely re-install the OS. Note that this problem exists
for me on Ubuntu 8.04.4, and Lucid alpha 2. Will try on 9.10 tonight...

Ubuntu 9.10 w/nvidia driver seems to work OK. So failure is occurring
for me on 8.04.4 and Lucid alpha 2.
Sequence of events is:
1. Fresh install of OS.
2. Use System > Administration > Update Manager to install all current updates.
3. Re-boot.
4. Use System > Administration > Hardware Drivers to

in step 6, sign-on screen never appears. System locks BEFORE sign-on
