Ubuntu 9.10 w/nvidia driver seems to work OK. So failure is occurring for me on 8.04.4 and Lucid alpha 2.
Sequence of events is: 1. Fresh install of OS. 2. Use System > Administration > Update Manager to install all current updates. 3. Re-boot. 4. Use System > Administration > Hardware Drivers to install recommended Nvidia graphics driver. 5. Re-boot. 6.
