The default proprietary nvidia drivers should be changed to either

Not sure how to remove Unity from the "affects" line. If someone would
do that, I'd appreciate it.

Still occurring with the latest Natty.
Fedora is now including the work around patch in their stock kernels
(called drm-nouveau-evo-hang.patch). I've been running this patch on
top of the stock ubuntu kernels for months now with no negative side
effect. The impact of the patch is low, as its wit
I had a video problem after upgrading from Ubuntu 10 to 11.04. The icons
kept flashing. Also the GL screensavers in Xscreensaver eg Engine would
not work. The video is NVIDIA 173.14.30 installed by Synaptic with a
GeForce FX5500 card. The eventual solution was very easy.

This affects me as well. (Nvidia 7300 LE)
When booting into "ubuntu classic (no effects)" and then enabling compiz
with `compiz --replace` it causes the same problem. Killing compiz
unfreezes it. Disabling the compiz 'OpenGL plugin' (pretty essential),
also prevents the freeze.

Here is my nvidia bug report for the 270 (current) nvidia driver. You can do
this bug report even thought the display is apparently frozen, but you will see
no feedback at all (which is really weird).
To do this, press Ctrl+Alt+t (which invisibly open a terminal window), and wait
a few seconds.
I just want a working PC, proprietary drivers or open source, anything
that works will do me. At the moment there is not a complete solution
for anything except the Classic desktop with no effects, which is being
phased out on the next release anyway. Guess I will stick with 10.04 for
a while yet!
The appears to be yet another duplicate of Bug #728745 and others. But
this is not upgrade issue. It is a problem for certain nvidia cards that
has been there since alpha and is sadly still in the release version
from a fresh install. I have heard it maybe an nvidia driver issue, but
that does not
Note the workarounds appear _not_ to work with Natty.
I upgraded and couldn't convince Natty to install -96 fully. I don't
recall the exact message, but I think it suggested it couldn't satisfy
the package dependencies.

There is a bug in Jockey in that once a proprietary driver has been

disappears never to return!. Apparently you have to uninstall and purge
the nvidia drivers and reset xorg.conf to get the Nouveau one back in
the list, so it can be act
