Almost same with my Dell latitude E4300.
When I boot with an external monitor attached, system locks right after login,

I downgraded to NVIDIA 275.43 and the problem is gone, so it appears to be a
problem with recent Nvidia drivers.
I don't know of a good way to downgrade though, I just removed nvidia-current
and nvidia-current-updates, blacklisted nouveau module as well as plucked it
from initramfs and installed

compiz crashed with SIG
I discovered that if I plug an external display, the two displays (the
original tablet one's and the external one) work perfectly, then if I
disconnect the external display, the original one still works great. If
I reboot with only one display : same problem.

When it was happening to me, I believe an alternative was to login via SSH
and kill the X11 desktop session (including the display driver). In my
case it was usually quicker to login and just issue a reboot command.

I can confirm this problem too on precise XUbuntu (12.04), 32bit
edition.
I tried to remove the lock from the caps lock, i.e. to behave it as a
normal shift. With xubuntu 10.10 I had the following working solution:

upstream, so we now need to update the packaging in ubuntu to build this
-omap package. that basically should require to enable "--enable-omap-
experimental-api" in the makefile and add "libdrm-omap1"
note that migrating to 2.6.35 or potentially the upcoming 2.6.36 would
be much better from an OMAP perspectives.

I can confirm the same behaviour on my laptop.
I changed the permissions to /etc/X11/xorg.conf (sudo chmod 666
/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and tried again but still not able to save the setting
changes.
I WAS able to save the changes when starting nvidia settings as root (sudo
nvidia-settings).
