A small update. I disabled DRI and GLX and seems that is freezes only

impression) that freezes take place when there are disk writes. For

Yes, when the display turns off sometimes it cannot be turned back on.
Instead of restarting I do something like: Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then back
Alt+F7 (or wherever your X is). That turns the display back on when
it's stuck. This is surely a bug and it appeared with older versions
of the Nvidia driver.
Touchpad detection now works correctly since upgrading to 10.10 and was
working perfectly with one of the earlier 10.10 kernels. However since
upgrading to 2.6.35-22-generic, multi-touch scrolling is very erratic,
and will suddenly jump up or down over a large chunk of the document
mid-scrolling.

Thank you for your help! I forgot to mention that I used to do that in Lucid
before the xorg.conf workaround. Sadly that doesn't seem to help in Maverick. I
wonder if downgrading to an older version of nvidia drivers would help.

Chag's fix worked perfectly for me! I had the exact same problem and
setup
* nvidia card with dual monitor, with one monitor rotated
* upgraded to Ubuntu Maverick
* X started up fine, but when I tried to move any window, the whole X server
would segfault
I rebuild xserver-xorg-core according to

Just figured out what is going on here.
It was actually chromium causing the leakage in the X server when it has
"GPU Accelerated Canvas 2D" enabled (it's off by default). I just
disabled it, restarted X and now things are working brilliantly again.

I see a lot of people are having trouble with this.
In Linux capitalization is VERY important. Here you guys did not
capitalize your the "X" in your resolution. Once you capitalize your "X"
you should be good. Here is an example of what worked for
