falling back to vesa has enough problems of its own, that decision might

So, you've got two problems here:
1) Something has accidentally installed the nvidia drivers during your upgrade
to Lucid, breaking all other drivers. Since you don't have an nvidia card,
that's broken your display drivers.
2) The fglrx driver no longer supports your card, and the fglrx drivers
This is most likely fixed in mesa 7.9, which will (hopefully) be
uploaded shortly.

I can confirm this one too, but I can't confirm the X server high CPU
usage. But, I do experience the way slow scrolling in f.e. a terminal or
Gedit or Geany.
Fully updated Maverick, AMD64, even tried the latest nVidia beta driver
(260.19.04) for my GT 240 but no luck.

plymouth:debug to the end, but then the boot just froze at the splash
screen. I was unable to switch to another VT or find any way to get rid

Using the mesa from the sarvatt/mesa PPA is signifcantly better. Still
effects disabled by default (I guess blacklisted), but once manually
enabled, all I tried work just fine, including blur.
