I have the same problem too... ever since some recent update, the
touchpad is detected as a PS2 mouse. But that made the scrolling work.
The Sony Vaio E series has an ALPS touchpad, as it was detected as such
with the original 10.4 installation.

There is a hack to enable ONLY the discrete video card in ASUS ULXX-VT
models, which might be applicable to some similar hardware here;
Changing the SATA operation mode in BIOS from "enhanced" to "compatible"

I have installed 10.04 i386 Desktop on 2 Compaq Evo PCs. On both of them
the screen flashes black/white vertical bars when the screensaver kicks

After some time, almost randomly, fonts turns to scramble on X.
Showing desktop via VNC presents scrambled fonts.
Switching to vt1 and back to vt7 don't solve problem.

Appears to be a problem with the BIOS. Very disappointing!
I've tried numerous workarounds, but no joy. Was about to try Suse 11
when I saw the newegg article.

after I added the nvidia ppa and installe the nvidia drivers, I checked to see
if it was installed and running by 1) checking the hardware drivers to see if
nvidia current driver was installed and active, I also checked sysinfo which
also showed that it was installed. I then ran sudo nvidia-sett
The problem only appears while moving the mousepointer between screens.

Yesterday updates didn't help: now with gdm 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu2 (curious
naming btw) i'm experiencing the same problem at every boot, no matter if i
disconnect/connect usb drives, reboot or shutdown; furthermore, i'm now unable
to access to a console prompt since everything hang after aski
I suspect it's not so much a BIOS issue, though it's possible that
disabling the Intel GPU at the hardware level might help.

FWIW I am also seeing the exact same bug in a fresh Debian 'testing'
installation, up-to-date as of 2010-06-30.
The box is a Lenovo ThinkPad T510, with a ViewSonic VA2323wm 23"
external monitor, and uname says "Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Jun 1
04:34:03 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux". 'xrandr --v
