This is probably because xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.9.1-1ubuntu4 does
not support userland modesetting (UMS). In other word, it doesn't work
with the nomodeset option. I think this has been done because 2.10.0
which is planned for Lucid does not support UMS.

The package has to be built for Lucid so it can tie into the Lucid
versions of its dependencies. Older versions of xserver-xorg-video-intel
were failing to build on Lucid, and it looked like it may have taken
some work, so I just left that for later when we found a good version

The initial black screen problem looks like kernel modesetting bug. So
workaround would be booting with radeon.modeset=0 to use old UMS driver.
There has bee quite a lot fixes to mode selection in 2.6.33 kernel which
Ubuntu should backport to 2.6.32 kernel to fix the bugs in 2.6.32.
