Things are now much worse - I've attached a photo of the screen from a
Lucid Xubuntu LiveCD.

1. Xorg thinks its running 800x600 but rendered area is only 640 wide so 
right-side of desktop is cut-off
2. Repeated artifacts between the bottom of the desktop and bottom of the LCD
3. Desktop not centred vertically on the LCD (unless you allow for the 
artifacts) as it was previously when in a lower-than-physical resolution
