workaround is to open gpointing-device-settings, unclick/reclick all the
scroll buttons; then things work again. This bug is new in Oneiric;

i'm having a similar problem, also in karmic with a thinkpad x31.
Because i'm also suffering from very very slow speeds under gnome, i'm
running openbox instead. can i modify xorg.conf somehow to deal with
