The battery is always in my laptop. I sometimes have the AC power cord attached and sometimes not, but I haven't been keeping very careful track of that. I've certainly had the error appear when the AC power is unplugged, because I've had embarrassing moments showing up to meetings with a crashed computer (arrggh!). I'll experiment when I don't have 2 lectures to write for the morning!
