I upgraded my UB 10.10 to 11.04 and have the same issue. Just after the login
the OS freezes and does not respond to keyboard or mouse movements.
As a work around i booted in failsafe X mode and selected Ubuntu classic (no
effects) and currently I am able to login.

able to fully boot into my system with KMS enabled on my Radeon HD 4650.

I have the same effect, but never had problems with former Ubuntu
editions like 10.10 or 10.04. As soon as I log in, the mouse pointer
changes to "working" (circle spins) for about 5 to 10 seconds and then
everything freezes! Rebooted a dozen times and always the same effect. I
can log in with "Ubu
Just tried "sudo aticonfig --initial" which showed an error about a missing
fglrx-glx.so,
but did create a new /etc/X11/xorg.conf although a "sudo restart gdm" still
failed.
Then changed in this new /etc/X11/xorg.conf the driver "fglrx" into "ati" and
now "sudo restart gdm" starts X.
Finally
I'm quite busy at these days, but I will try when I have chance.

Doing cert testing on a Thinkpad T420 running Natty.
One test executes the following:
xset dpms force off
to test monitor powersaving. This works on the T420, but once you move
the mouse, the screen comes back on, but Unity appears completely
fro

Is there anything that can be done to get back into a somewhat normal
boot mode? After the text "Kubuntu 11.04" comes up and some commands
running underneath, the screen clears and then freezes. In Grub, I have
to put a # next to: set gfxpayload=slinux_gfx_mode in order to get
further into the boo
