I have the same effect, but never had problems with former Ubuntu editions like 10.10 or 10.04. As soon as I log in, the mouse pointer changes to "working" (circle spins) for about 5 to 10 seconds and then everything freezes! Rebooted a dozen times and always the same effect. I can log in with "Ubuntu (Abgesicherter Modus)" (safe mode) but then there is no window manager, i.e. all windows don't have a frame to change the window size/position/close/etc.
