I have the same issue with installed radeonhd and fglrx. Only removing
fglrx fix it. Of cource I need another or new xorg.conf, because
radeonhd is not able to work with a xorg.conf which is reconfigured by
aticonfig. The wrong xorg.conf lead to some colored blocks on the top of
my display.

I've tested the new 8.623 (Catalyst 9.7) on my HD 3870 (R670) from Karmic
(2.6.31-5-24), started with a new xorg.conf, aticonfig --initial and have the
same issue: black screen.
On the old kernel 2.6.28-14 the new 8.623 works, but without 2D support
(horrible!). I use radeonhd now (no gaming tod
re mtrr-uncover: I updated it to deal with a change to kernel header
that hijacked a symbol that I had used.

To log in on the live CD, the username is "ubuntu" and the password is
empty.
If you get something on the screen so you see what you're typing, you
can just run "xrandr --verbose > xrandr.log". The other xinit thing is
only a workaround if the screen is black or turned off so you don't see.

CD. I mounted the disk partition with /etc/X11 on it, and copied
xorg.conf into the live CD's /etc/X11, switched to a text console, and

Created liveUSB of Xubuntu Jaunty Alpha 4 and it started up with no
errors. However, once X and the DE were fully loaded, the mouse and
keyboard did not work at all - literally just stuck looking at the
dekstop.

well, booting with the "safe graphics mode" option.
Can you please also try to get xrandr output? The easiest (in the case the
screen would go black) is to boot with "text" and then run on the console:

I have tested my idea, by manually disabling composite immediately
before suspend and re enabling it immediately after resume, and it works
(ie, it doesn't hang).
I have written the script to do it (dbus is a pleasure!), but i have
been looking for weeks for some way to put it in KDE's suspend/res

- upgraded the kernel to 2.6.31-xx from the Karmic repsitory

Guy,
Ubuntu developers simply blacklist compiz on 8.10 Intrepid and don't
start it on the affected processors. Same thing on 9.04 jaunty and 9.10
karmic. Compiz won't even start on the later ubuntu's for video drivers
that don't support compiz.
The CD's for various releases are easy to download
I have upgraded to jaunty.
When I upgraded, the problems went away. I have had long uptimes on the
server.

Besides,. I'm booting a live CD. I don't see any /etc/X11/xorg.conf to be
modified. Please explain if I'm missing something. My HP desktop is still
