it is GPL, based on open standards, it's in our archive and it works
with webcams.
I've been using it for some time to make daily video calls to my girlfriend.

upgrade everything in -backports, I would either cherry pick the debs I

HDMI and DVI should be easily converted, since
HDMI's video is just DVI. FWIW I have the HDMI port of my PS3 connected
to a DVI monitor (a Dell thing) and it works perfectly.

No. a headset is just a dumb headset. no storage or anything like that.

is usually something that can be enabled when necessary, but isn't
always used. I've not come across an onboard HDMI before, but I do know
of others with nvidia cards with HDMI outputs that functioned entirely

That's not always true, e.g. Dapper is already old enough that it

FWIW, the excellent chaps at Fluendo now sell a licenced codec pack
which includes most of the popular windowsy formats (although only for
gstreamer, obviously).
