You could press alt+F2 to bring up the run command and then run "gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf" to edit the file without toucing a terminal, but as I said before if it doesnt work then it will drop you back to a terminal and you will have to return the file to its original state manually usin

Have a look in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and check that in the "Device" section the driver is set to "via". Unfortunately your graphics card isn't very linux friendly. You can get a second hand nVidia card (GeForce 2 or above) cheaply on eBay. That might help your video problems. Your processor is 32b

The light stays on using my USB drive under Ubuntu, but goes off under windows so it's not just you with this behaviour. Even with the light staying on I think it would be good for a popup message saying the device is safe to remove as you get in windows. It should be fairly simple to implement
