Have a look in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and check that in the "Device" section the driver is set to "via". Unfortunately your graphics card isn't very linux friendly. You can get a second hand nVidia card (GeForce 2 or above) cheaply on eBay. That might help your video problems. Your processor is 32bit.
