So there seem to be an incompatibility between the way Windows (and
smbtree) browse the "Windows network" and a Samba server where the DNS
name and NetBIOS name differ.
Just to make sure, does adding "netbios name = VSERVER-TERM" to

Looks like a problem in kdenetwork-filesharing, which rewrites smb.conf
entries with "file://" prefixes. Bug 373618 is related. With a broken

Reassigning to kdenetwork and renaming.

Yes, I did that as soon as I had installed the OS, as I had figured out
(and posted on Ubuntu forums) that this was an issue. I doublechecked
it after the mySQL upgrade, and it was still correct. Maybe it just
needed the reboot to flush out. I don't know, but as I said, it seems
to be working fi
Here's more efficient walkaround:
Don't delete or comment option "AuthInfoRequired username, password" in

Just change it's value to "AuthInfoRequired no".
It works for me...

/usr/bin/X11 is a symlink to /usr/bin in Ubuntu too, and the openssh
packaging relies on this (to avoid having to care whether old-world or
new-world X11 is installed). This symlink is shipped by the x11-common
package, on which xauth pre-depends. Do you have this properly
installed?

will solve the problem. Not sure why the symlink was missing in the
