I also have same problem with my Nexus4. It started when I updated to OTA14
and happens also with OTA15. I use stable/bq-aquaris.en channel.
In my case crash happens when I try to shutdown program/-s from app
switcher. Usually I have gmail, browser (~8tabs), dialer and messaging apps

I have been using only logviewer app . You could try.
or otherwise really try free up memory ... For example:
- closing all running tabs of the web-browser
- deleting all history and downloaded maps of unav
- All saved cache of all web-app

I don't know what is the diference between a crash of utity and a reboot.
From the time I made a hard reset I haven't put it in writeable mode.
The window is coloured brown, It appears something (a circle but I don't
remember what it said).
The window is not black nor white.

I noticed the same behavior on my E5 ... I think is like a unity reset
when the phone is running out of memory. UT tweak tool helped me in
cleaning all apps cache. After this the issue appeared less frequently..
I think UT has been always eating to much ram and swap.
