It is valuable for open-vm-tools to install automatically for both
desktop and server if their OS installer detects that it is running on a
VMware VM.
This may require first work with the Debian community to get this implemented
for Debian since Ubuntu is based on Debian.

Currently open-vm-tools is installed automatically by default when
install guestOS ubuntu server in ESXi. But It's not installed
automatically when install guestOS ubuntu desktop in ESXi and we need to
install it with command "sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools"

This issue is not fixed in GA release.
Patricia Gaughen said the fix would be available as a update.

I hit the similar issue as described in #44 in Canonical Ubuntu 15.10,
Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 16.10, Ubuntu 17.04 when check in ESXi6.0 GA, ESXi
6.5GA, ESXi 6.6.
Issue description:
Reached the end of the full installation, and got the "Installation complete -
you need to restart" dialogue. Clicked
verified.
It has been fixed when check ubuntu17.10-beta2-desktop64.
