In 12.10 64bit with Gnome I have the same error message. It starts
happening after a few days uptime and affects all applications started
from the menus.
It is still possible to run the applications from the command line.

I had the same issue after installing amarok14, then moved back to amarok (2.x)
on Ubuntu 11.04.
I first tried sudo chown -R $HOME/.kde
that did not work
Then I tried both "sudo kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental", then sudo chown -R
$HOME/.kde
Then problem disappeared.

I have noted the same bug on newly installed version 11.04 i386 32 bit
on a Thinkpad T61P. Executing: sudo setupcon from a terminal
successfully reads the config file and invokes my desired change to a
large font for the 1920 x 1200 display.
