The Package manager "gear" icon is always there when I am running this
USB disk, but there is no update available when i check, and EVERY
method I can think of from Synaptic, to "apt-get autoclean" and even

I know this is trivial, but as I see it, "Updates" update the
Repo/Sources list, whereas "Upgrades" actually add, replace or delete
apps/packages.
Therefore shouldn't it be called "Upgrade Manager"?

Unfortunately suggest a clean install to ensure no conflicts, but still can you
get the type of hardware/software found in your system for the Audio?
If you use Windows you can get that from "System Information" . In Ubuntu you
realy need a package like "Sysinfo" - it's in the repositories.

I see 2.6.28-15 as a Jaunty Kernel. 2.6.31-x is the Karmic kernel.

Did you do a upgrade or a new install?
Did you see any "Partial Update/Upgrade" warnings?
Suggest a fresh new install. If you have the disk space you can run the Karmic
beta
This could be a specific error due to a daily update.

Another vote for NOT having this enabled by default - it should fall in the
"Startup Sounds" category.
