When it crashes it does not produce and Xorg.0.log file.
Also, I've tried alt-SysRq (my kernel is set up for this) but it doesn't
help with this crash.
I've tried running gdb from a remote terminal, I'll paste the output
below. When I do that, it ends up hanging in the usual way. I've also
looked

Adding
Driver "vesa"
to xorg.conf does work. It allows X to come up. So this is good, though it
doesn't give me all the choices of screen resultion I'd like.
In answer to your second question, no, the Hardy live CD does not work.
It hangs.
Also, I just tried the live CD on a second computer with

It does look like a kernel issue.
I just booted with an earlier kernel:
uname -a
Linux parapithecus 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Thu Jun 7 19:00:28 UTC 2007 x86_64
GNU/Linux
and it works. that is, i took the vesa line out of xorg.conf, and it
doesn't crash this kernel.
I'll try it with that upstrea
I just tried X (without the vesa line) with the 2.6.25-1 kernel, and
found that it also hangs.
I also have a modification to what I said about the 2.6.20-16. The first
time I boot into that kernel, and startx, it works. However, if I log
out, and try again, then it too hangs. (I'm not using gdm at

After upgrade from gutsy to hardy, on boot, my x-server freezes with a

I looked in /var/log/ for the xorg log.
As far as I can tell, its not writing anything there. There is an
Xorg.0.log, but that comes from before the problem. When I try to start
up the x-server now, as far as I can tell its not writing anything in
/var/log/
is there somewhere else to look?
