Adding Driver "vesa" to xorg.conf does work. It allows X to come up. So this is good, though it doesn't give me all the choices of screen resultion I'd like.
In answer to your second question, no, the Hardy live CD does not work. It hangs. Also, I just tried the live CD on a second computer with the same hardware setup, and this too hangs. (video card "Intel Corporation 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics Controller").
